SH2 remains restricted to single lane north of Gisborne

|

Waka Kotahi is advising that SH2 will remain reduced to a single lane over the weekend at the site of an underslip on the southern approach to the Motu Bridge between Gisborne and Opotiki.

Contractors discovered the large underslip on the road early this morning, following heavy rain in the area for the past 48 hours.

An initial site inspection was completed today and Waka Kotahi is confident that the road can remain safely open to one lane.

Temporary traffic lights will be set up today to manage traffic through the single lane, and motorists can expect short delays.

Waka Kotahi will continue to monitor the site throughout the weekend to ensure the road remains safe, pending a full geotechnical inspection to be undertaken next week.

The ground conditions at the site are currently too wet for remedial works to begin. Design work on a permanent solution will begin on Monday (18 July).

Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their caution and patience while the road remains reduced to a single lane.
