SH4 closed at Taumarunui

UPDATE, 4.55PM FRIDAY 3 JUNE: Contractors are hoping to reopen the road to a single lane under traffic light control later tonight, for light vehicles only. Once the road reopens, motorists are asked to be patient, take care and adhere to all traffic management on their journeys through the area.

Friday 3 June 2022: State Highway 4 is closed at Taumarunui due to storm damage.

The road is closed between the intersections with State Highway 43 and Okahukura Bridge Road, north of Taumarunui, where a large hole has formed on one side of the road. Contractors are on-site.

There is a detour in place. Southbound traffic should turn left on to Okahukura Bridge Road from SH4, then right on to Ongarue Back Road before continuing on to Golf Road, then right on to Short Street, then back on to SH4. Northbound traffic should sue the same route, in reverse. Please note this detour is only suitable for light vehicles.

People are asked to plan ahead, allow extra time and follow the directions of traffic management staff and signs.

Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience and expects to provide another update later today, ahead of the long weekend.
