SH6 Kawarau Gorge closure for blasting work

Motorists can expect delays tomorrow, Thursday 18 July, to allow blasting of unstable rock adjacent to the Goldfields Mining Centre on State highway 6 in the Kawarau Gorge, about 8km west of Cromwell, and 50km east of Queenstown.

The New Zealand Transport Agency Area Manager Central Otago John Jarvis says the work involves breaking up several large unstable boulders, so they can be safely removed from the slope above the highway.

Thursday 18th July, blasting will be carried out between 3:00pm and 3:30pm, subject to weather conditions.

Mr Jarvis says minor delays will be ongoing in the days following the blast so remaining unstable rock can be removed and for road clearing work.

NZTA regrets any inconvenience to road users and the neighbouring businesses, and appreciates their patience while this essential safety work is carried out he said.
