Snow closes Desert Road (SH1)

|

The Desert Road (State Highway 1), between Rangipo and Waiouru, has been closed due to heavy snow and ice, the NZ Transport Agency says.

Contractors are currently using snow ploughs to clear the snow and are hoping to reopen the road later today.

The alternative route using SH46, 47, 4 and 49 through National Park to Waiouru is open - although care is required with more snow forecast for later today, the Transport Agency’s Waikato journey manager, Liam Ryan said.

“Our contractors are monitoring this route and motorists should be aware that there will be maintenance vehicles operating on these roads clearing snow and treating ice areas as necessary,” he said.

“We ask that people plan their journey where possible around the closure and allow extra time to take the alternative routes – please, drive to the conditions and watch your speeds.”
