Temporary road for traffic at Puketona Junction during roundabout construction

|

Motorists driving through the Puketona Junction in Northland are advised that traffic will be diverted on to a temporary road during construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of State Highways 10 and 11.

Waka Kotahi Senior Manager Project Delivery Andrew Thackwray says workers have been felling trees between Puketona Junction café and the bridge on SH11 and on the western side of SH10.

“The removal of trees on SH10 is to allow room for construction of a temporary road for SH10 and SH11 traffic while the roundabout is constructed. Safety barriers will be installed from the bridge past BOI Country Lodge so that crews can work safely behind the barriers.”

Both lanes of SH10 traffic will shift slightly to the east and there will be fresh line marking on the road. The speed limit will be reduced to 50kph through the construction area.

Work is also continuing to locate and move underground utilities like stormwater pipes, power, fibre optic and telephone cables.

“Waka Kotahi urges motorists to drive with care and keep to the temporary speed limits, drive to the conditions and be patient and understanding during this busy construction period. The safety of our road crews is a priority and we want everyone to get home safely each night.”

The Puketona Junction roundabout is one of three intersection improvement projects in the Far North funded by the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme. The others are at the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 11 in Kawakawa and at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Rawene Road to the Hokianga Ferry.

Projects funded by the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme will address key challenges our regional state highway networks face including safety risks, resilience and congestion problems, accessibility and travel time reliability. The projects will also support regional economic development.
