Transport Agency plans weekend closure of SH1 in Whangarei

State Highway 1 at the southern entry to Whangarei will be closed this weekend to allow NZ Transport Agency contractors to repair a damaged section of highway above a broken stormwater pipe.

The highway has settled around the pipe just south of the SH1/Murdoch Crescent intersection.

The northbound lane of the SH1 will be closed from 5pm on Saturday (10 August) for approximately two hours while preliminary work is undertaken.  During the closure, the Transport Agency says a manual traffic control system will be in place to divert northbound traffic in to the southbound lane.

Repairs to the highway will start at 6am on Sunday (11 August). Northbound traffic will again be diverted by a manual traffic control system into the southbound lane past the work site.  When traffic volumes increase during the day, all SH1 southbound traffic will be diverted along Mount Pleasant Road, Arcus Street and Southend Avenue.
“We ask all road users to be patient along this section of SH1while we complete the repairs and restore this section of the highway to a safe condition,” says the Transport Agency’s Senior Delivery Manager for Northland, Jacqui Hori-Hoult.  “It is a live work site and people need to take care for the safety of themselves and their passengers and our contractors.”

The work, which is weather dependent, will be completed by 6am next Monday morning. Meanwhile, the Transport Agency continues a busy programme of works at a number of other locations across Northland to improve the region’s state highway network
