Update on timing of SH1 Taupō and Tūrangi works

|

The planned road closure at Hallets Bay on State Highway 1 between Taupō and Tūrangi, has been deferred until next summer’s 2023/24 road maintenance season.

The re-surfacing work, which was due to commence in February, was originally postponed in anticipation of Cyclone Gabrielle.

In the wake of the cyclone, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency wants to keep SH1 open to ensure essential services and freight can access routes to Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti Gisborne without delay.

330m section of road needs to be reconstructed here, which can’t be done without a full closure. The work can only be undertaken in warm, dry weather, necessitating the postponement to next summer.

Waka Kotahi contractors will continue to respond to any pavement issues that arise on SH1 and carry out repairs as required until the full reconstruction is completed.
