Waimana Gorge to open 24/7 today

The NZ Transport Agency would like to advise the Waimana Gorge will be open to all motorists 24 hours a day from this evening, Wednesday 21 August.

Repairing the Waimana Gorge slip

NZ Transport Agency Regional Transport System Manager Rob Campbell says we would like to thank motorists for their patience, especially over the past few weeks while the gorge has been down to one lane, reduced hours and closed on occasions with heavy rain.

“Our contractors have worked hard to not only clear the materials from the road but they have now installed lighting towers that provide a clear view of the slip face overnight. This now enables us to monitor the site 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of motorists.

Since the initial slip came down at the beginning of July, contractors have carried out several controlled blasts to remove loose material, sluiced the rockface with  helicopters  and removed approximately 500 m3 of material.

“We want to remind motorists that that the gorge will may close again if there is a severe weather warnings or significant rainfall forecast, so we encourage those travelling to check our social media and website before leaving so they are able to plan their journey.”

“The next stage will be to install netting and automated monitoring systems and we will continue to work hard to install this permanent solution at the site over the coming weeks,” says Mr Campbell.

The Transport Agency would like to thank road users and the community for their understanding and patience during this time.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey this summer. Keep up to date with:
