Wind warning for Auckland Harbour Bridge

|

Wind gusts from 8am-11am on Thursday may result in restrictions on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Metservice has forecast wind gusts for the Auckland Harbour Bridge and a severe thunderstorm for Auckland tomorrow morning.

From 8am-11am wind gusts of 65-75km/h are likely, and there is a low risk of 80-90km/h. Gusts of 90-110km/h and higher are possible if there are thunderstorms.

Waka Kotahi is working closely with Metservice to monitor wind speeds with maintenance crews out on the network ready to react and close lanes on the bridge if wind gusts exceed threshold levels. The safety of road users is our top priority and we won’t hesitate to reduce speeds, close lanes or close the bridge if necessary.

The Moveable Lane Barrier will be in PM peak overnight for maintenance works but will be shifted back to 4:4 position and will not be moved to the AM peak due to the risk period of 8am-11am.

Drivers of high sided vehicles and motorcyclists are encouraged to avoid the Auckland Harbour Bridge and use the Western Ring on State Highways 16 and 18.

Waka Kotahi advises motorists to plan ahead by checking social media or our Journey Planner before heading out.

Updates will also be provided as the situation unfolds on the Waka Kotahi Twitter account.

Information on weather warnings and watches is available from Metservice.
