Winter blast prompts call for motorists to take extra care

|

With sleety showers, hail and snow forecast for Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills tonight, the NZ Transport Agency is urging motorists to take extreme care on Canterbury roads during the next few days.

The Transport Agency’s Journey Manager Lee Wright says Christchurch is expected to experience freezing temperatures, sleet and possibly snow tonight which is likely to make driving conditions treacherous in the morning.

“We are asking all motorists to take extra care when travelling about the region this week, in particular throughout Banks Peninsula and Christchurch’s hill suburbs tonight and tomorrow morning.”

She says everyone needs to drive to the conditions; to allow more time for their journeys, to slow down and be prepared for unexpected hazards.

“If temperatures plummet as forecast, the roads could be extremely icy and slippery in the morning. This will make the roads unforgiving to even the smallest of mistakes; all it takes is a split second to lose control.”

Ms Wright says everyone should check road conditions before travelling and avoid all unnecessary travel if conditions could make travel hazardous.

The MetService has also issued snow warnings for Porters Pass and Lewis Pass and Ms Wright says if travelling in these alpine pass areas, motorists need to be prepared for delays and ensure their vehicle is winter fit.

“This means getting your tyres checked, along with your brakes, windscreen wipers, lights and steering system. It is also critical to not only carry tyre chains but know how to use and fit them if needed.”

She says motorists are also advised to be prepared by dressing for the conditions, carrying warm clothes, keeping a survival kit in their vehicle and having at least half a tank of fuel in case diverted onto another route.
