Work begins on SH74 at Lyttelton Tunnel

Motorists are being advised of possible delays on State Highway 74 at the site of the former Lyttelton Tunnel Control Building from next Monday (20 January) as work gets underway rebuilding the retaining wall and repairing the road.

Badly damaged during the February 2011 earthquake, the retaining wall will be removed and the adjacent area filled to support the road, says the NZ Transport Agency's Maintenance Contract Manager Barry Stratton.

"The road along this section of the highway will also be dug up and re-laid."

He says two lanes will be maintained throughout the 12-week contract, however motorists will need to observe the 30km/h speed limit that has been in place since the earthquake.

"The two lanes will be narrow, making it critical that motorists slow down to 30km/h and take care travelling through the area."

The work will cost $1.3 million.
