Work to restore road shoulder on SH35 to begin next week

|

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising that work will begin next week to reinstate the road shoulder on State Highway 35 at Turihaua which was eroded by high tides and heavy swells in September 2019.

To ensure the safety of road users, the shoulder has been closed with speed restrictions in place. Work will begin on Tuesday 16 June, depending on weather and tides, to reinstate the road shoulder and restore the road back to its original width.

“Crews will be constructing a rock revetment wall to build up the shoulder and native plants will be placed along the wall to help protect against further erosion,” Senior Network and Journey Manager Helen Harris says.

“While this work is underway, the left lane will be closed to traffic from 7am to 5pm on weekdays. Stop/go traffic management and a speed restriction of 30 kilometres per hour will be in place during the work. Motorists should expect short delays.”

It is expected to take two weeks for this work to be complete.

Crews will be returning to the area in the spring, likely September, to undertake resilience improvements and previously delayed pavement repairs.
