Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is strongly urging people to avoid all non-essential travel in the Upper North Island, with several state highways and local roads closed due to downed trees, slips and flooding.
High wind and steady rain is impacting roads around the Coromandel Peninsula with State Highway 25 (SH25) compromised by multiple fallen trees, surface flooding and other debris on the road. The highway is fully closed in some sections.
Waka Kotahi says the severe and unpredictable winds from Cyclone Gabrielle are likely to force the Auckland Harbour Bridge to remain closed overnight and all day tomorrow (Monday 13 February).

For safety reasons SH1 between Brynderwyn and Waipu will remain CLOSED until further notice. There have been more slips overnight. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide further updates.

People heading north from State Highway 18 (SH18) are in for a smoother and more connected journey as they travel through Constellation Interchange next week as the new SH18 to SH1 direct motorway connection onramp is set to open.
SH1 Brynderwyn Hills to Waipu will re-open in both directions for all traffic including over-dimension vehicles from 8am tomorrow, Friday 10 February. The road will re-open under traffic management (barriers, safety hit posts and temporary speed restrictions) and motorists are urged to use caution and drive to the conditions.
