Truck and trailer units will be able to travel on the Takaka Hill Road into and out of Golden Bay, SH60, from midday Tuesday 20 March, with the lunchtime, (permits-only) freight convoy.
A short detour will be in place for people travelling north on State Highway 1 between Mosgiel and Dunedin from 6pm tonight (Friday, 9 March) until 7pm on Sunday, 11 March, to allow contractors to work on a safety upgrade.
The North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery team (NCTIR) has closed State Highway 1 between Peketa, south of Kaikōura, and the Leader Road*, near Parnassus, this afternoon.
Journeys between Picton and Christchurch along SH1 through Kaikōura are slightly longer than before ex-tropical cyclone Gita inundated the coast with rain and resulting landslides and road damage.
Repair work on the Takaka Hill highway, State Highway 60, between Riwaka and Golden Bay has gone well in recent days. “Crews have been making good progress while the weather has been dry, clearing the road and making it safer and more resilient, which will enable truck and trailer units to make the journey soon,” says Frank Porter, NZ Transport Agency System Manager.
The NZ Transport Agency advises people who normally use State Highway 73 between Castle Hill Village and Lake Lyndon, on the main route between the West Coast and Canterbury, that the Porter River Bridge is about to have overnight deck repairs for two weeks.
