This page relates to the 2021-24 National Land Transport Programme.

Introduction

Safety promotion, education and advertising activities should use Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency endorsed best practice guidelines and examples, including those set out below.

The use of Waka Kotahi resources ensures consistency between activities, reduces administrative and development costs and maximises the effectiveness of delivered activities.

School-based road safety education

Findings from New Zealand and overseas show that approaches to road safety education are not equally effective. Careful selection and evaluation of activities improves the odds that road safety education and learning is deeply embedded and leads to lasting changes in skills, behaviour and attitudes. All approved organisations (and Waka Kotahi for its own activities) should refer to the Waka Kotahi Education Portal when developing school-based interventions work programme and give effect to the key research findings.

Waka Kotahi has published guidelines for schools on how to design and evaluate effective road safety education for school communities. Information also includes case studies and outlines of road safety education practice.

A range of resources for teachers, school leaders and the road safety community is available on the Waka Kotahi Education Portal. These include curriculum units for Years 1–13, videos, narratives, the School traffic safety team manual and advice for families.

School travel planning

Waka Kotahi encourages a whole school approach to influence students to adopt road safety behaviours. By engaging in school community partnerships, considering the school ethos and organisation and through studying the school curriculum young people can individually and collectively make informed decisions that contribute to a safe system. A safe system involves the combination of safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles and safe road use.

You can find the whole-of-school approach and resources in the Waka Kotahi Education Portal, which includes a guide to help coordinators develop a safe school travel plan.

Young drivers – DRIVE Programme

DRIVE is a joint programme (Waka Kotahi / Accident Compensation Corporation) that has been designed to help young people become confident, capable and safe drivers.

DRIVE provides young drivers with free learning tools and educational support from pre-learner right through to passing the full licence test and helps them to become safe and skilled lifelong drivers. Evidence shows us that DRIVE users are safer drivers and achieve better test outcomes than those who do not use DRIVE to obtain their learner and restricted licence.

The content has also been specifically developed to support students with low literacy or with special learning needs.

Road safety advertising calendar

The Road safety advertising calendar outlines the key advertising themes the national road safety advertising programme aims to focus on each month. The advertising team encourages you (all road safety partners) to align your regional advertising to the same themes, where possible, so all road safety messages are consistent.

Waka Kotahi advertising resources

The advertising team encourages approved organisations to use national advertising material for regional work where appropriate. If local campaigns in a region are similar or support the same issues or messages as the national campaigns, regional work can build on the exposure of the national programme.

You can view current national campaigns on the Waka Kotahi website.

Advertising campaigns

You are required to use the advertising material request form to obtain permission to use any of the national advertising images, taglines or existing advertising material. Talent contracts are in place to protect the interest of the actors and some images can only be used on certain mediums. As with any brand, you must check out the legalities of its use first or you could be faced with an unnecessary expense.

Waka Kotahi also has some promotional material you may use for supporting a local campaign.
