Symbols and signs

Approved symbols can be used on traffic signs to indicate where charging stations are available or to identify parking spaces reserved for electric vehicles charging their batteries.

The electric vehicle parking symbol(external link) was published in the New Zealand Gazette in May 2016 which means this symbol can be used for signs identifying parking sites for electric vehicles charging their batteries.

Parking signs

Parking signs must be as specified in the Land Transport Rule: Traffic Control Devices 2004 and as shown in the Traffic Control Devices Manual:

Motorist service signs

Motorist service signs provide directional and positional information.

Motorist service signs can include information, such as ‘300m on left’, to give motorists advance direction of up-coming public charging stations and to prevent impulse braking.

Examples of motorist service signs are shown below:

The NZ Transport Agency recommends that motorist service signs are placed on main roads to identify upcoming locations and access-points to public charging stations which have a charging rate of at least 43kW. In areas with fewer public charging stations, it may also be appropriate to provide signposting to charging stations with a lower charging rate.

Road markings

Road marking lines

The outline of parking spaces reserved for electric vehicles charging their batteries must be marked with yellow lines, in accordance with Land Transport Rule: Traffic Control Devices 2004.
