Purpose

The Western Corridor (SH1) connects the northern and southern Canterbury areas with Christchurch International Airport, it runs between Belfast in the north and the large industrial area of Hornby in the south.

Increased commercial and industrial activity, particularly in Hornby and at the airport, is creating more traffic and congestion at peak times.

Benefits

  • Congestion will be reduced.
  • Travel times will be shortened and travel time reliability will be improved.
  • New safety features will provide a safer four laned road for users.

Project features

  • Johns Road will be four-laned from Sawyers Arms Road to Harewood Road, with a raised median, median barrier and also side barriers (a new safety feature for the Western Corridor).
  • McLeans Island Road changes to be left in and left out only.
    • Drivers will no longer be able to turn right into or out of McLeans Island Road as this movement is too dangerous across two land of fast moving traffic.
    • When this project is complete drivers will be able to turn left into and out of McLeans Island Road however during some phases of construction access at McLeans Island Road will need to be closed. (Vehicles wanting to access McLeans Island Road will be detoured along Sawyers Arms Road and Logistics Drive.)
    • Temporary and permanent signage will be installed to direct all road users.
