Project introduction

The Twin Coast Discovery Route is a picturesque 800km circular route of Northland. Heading up the east coast via SH1 from Whangarei, through Kawakawa and then onto SH10 through Kerikeri, before reconnecting with SH1 right up to Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island.

Purpose

Tourism is a big part of Northland’s economy. By improving the network here, the Twin Coast Discovery Route will make travel safer and easier for visitors and locals, as well as enabling future growth and development of the region.

Benefits

Upgrades to the state highway network along the Twin Coast Discovery Route will provide a safer and more reliable journey for locals, freight and tourists alike. The project works will include:

  • Improvement works to facilitate Waipapa growth
  • Improve the resilience of SH10, including upgrading Taipa and Kaeo bridges
  • Improvements at Opononi township
  • Replacing Matakohe Bridges, and
  • Waimamaku River improvements
