We know speed limits that are safe and right for the road are just one part of a safe road system. Here are some of the other projects we’re involved with around the north.

Road maintenance

Over the next three years, $344 million is forecast to be spent on road maintenance for state highways and local roads across Te Tai Tokerau to support freight and tourism connections. In Tāmaki Makaurau, that figure is $1.4 billion.

Safety and infrastructure projects

We are making significant investment in safety infrastructure along 80km of SH1 from Whangārei to Wellsford, which is a high-risk rural road, and on 40km of SH10 between Kaeo to Pakaraka.

Changes such as widened centrelines and safety barriers can have a significant impact on the number of people dying or being seriously injured on our roads.

A planned safety project on SH16 between Brigham Creek to Waimauku will install flexible road safety barriers and flush medians, adding extra lanes, making intersections safer and creating more space for people on bikes.

Safety improvements valued at $67million are being installed on SH1 Wellsford to north of Warkworth through the Dome Valley, including median safety barriers, wider road shoulders and new right-turn bays.

Projects

A new two-lane bridge and roundabout at the intersection of SH10 and Whangaroa Road in Kaeo will improve safety and traffic flow along this section of the Twin Coast Discovery Route renowned as a bottleneck. Safety improvements at the SH1/SH15 Loop Road intersection and SH1/Portland Road intersection will make travel safer across the state highway network south of Whangārei. This section of SH1 carries 19,000 vehicles a day of which 13% are heavy freight, including trucks carrying export logs to Northport at Marsden Point.

Some of the other work taking place on these corridors includes activities funded through the National Land Transport Plan (NLTP). These activities aim to make New Zealand’s roads safer and more resilient, to provide you with healthier, more environmentally friendly ways to move to the places that matter to you, and to keep freight flowing.

Waka Kotahi’s NLTP is a three-year programme of prioritised activities with a 10-year forecast of revenue and expenditure.

The map below shows other Waka Kotahi projects underway or planned in Northland and north Auckland. Note that these projects did not form part of the May/June 2022 speed review consultation.

Behaviour change

Working in partnership with key agencies, such as NZ Police, we deliver driver training and education programmes targeted at seatbelt use, speed, and alcohol and drug impairment. We also support community-based initiatives that encourage safer behaviours on our roads.

Local road speed reviews

Speed reviews are not limited to state highways, they’re also taking place on local roads in Northland and north Auckland to check that their speed limits are safe and appropriate.
