COVID-19 SERVICES UPDATE: Information on Waka Kotahi services

Project introduction

Work to repair damage from a large slip on State Highway 2 at Waioeka Gorge between Oponae and Wairata.

Open hours

State Highway 2 through the Waioeka Gorge is now open 24 hours. Please take care when driving through, and respect the speed restrictions in place at the slip site.

Motorists are advised to always check the Journey Planner before planning a trip, as a temporary closure may unexpectedly occur.

Please use State Highway 35 if you’re travelling outside of these hours, and be aware this route will add significant time to your trip.

Check back on this project page for regular updates as repair works progresses.

To stay up to date with the latest information, check the highway conditions before travelling or ring 0800 44 44 49.

About the slip

On 24 June 2018, a large slip between Oponae (Waiata Road) and Wairata (Wairata Road) left Waioeka Gorge closed for six days. The road is now open during daylight hours. Contractors are working on the site seven days a week to restore safe 24 hour access.

An eight metre wide, two-lane road is being built around the slip, which should take two weeks to construct. Once complete, the road will be open to normal activity (other than the speed restriction through the site).
