Project updates

What we know

Whanganui is growing, and the way this road is used has changed. There are more homes in this area, and the current speeds are no longer safe and appropriate.

There have been 21 crashes on this stretch of road between 2008 and 2009. Two people died and three were seriously injured in these crashes.

To make it safer we’re proposing to change the speed limits.

What we’re proposing

Based on what we know, we think the following would be safer speeds on this section of road:

Location Current speed limit Proposed speed limit
1

Virginia Heights
From 30m south of Turere Place/Great North Road (SH3) intersection to 200m north of Tirimoana Place/Great North Road (SH3) intersection.

70km/h

50km/h

2

Whanganui to Westmere
From 200m north of Tirimoana Place/Great North Road (SH3) intersection to 100m north of Blue Skin Road/Great North Road (SH3) intersection.

100km/h

80km/h

Have your say

Formal consultation on new speed limit proposals is required under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limit (2017).

This is your opportunity to have your say before decisions on the speed limits for this road is made by the NZ Transport Agency.

If you wish to make a submission on the proposed changes, please read the information below.

Submissions close at 5pm on Monday, 16 December 2019.
