Background

We know that the highways in and out of Tairāwhiti are long and winding, and travel through some unforgiving terrain. Communities and stakeholders have told us that more passing opportunities would help improve the experience of sharing the road when driving through these environments.

As part of the Tairāwhiti Roading package, funded by the Provincial Growth Fund and National Land Transport Programme, up to $33 million has been allocated for a package of passing opportunities on State Highway 2 (SH2) and State Highway 35 (SH35).
