Speed reduction decision
After careful consideration, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has lowered the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h on State Highway 58 between State Highway 2 and the Pauatahanui roundabout. The change came into effect on 17 September 2018. We asked the community for their views on changing the speed limit and considered all the feedback from the consultation. We did not find any compelling or new information that changed our view that 80km/h is the safe and appropriate speed limit for this road.
Lowering the speed limit is part of a package of safety improvements planned for the route that includes two new roundabouts, a median barrier, road widening and improved access from side roads and driveways. Together with these safety improvements, the lower speed limit will contribute to a 45–65% reduction in high severity crashes. This means there will be 16 to 21 fewer deaths and serious injuries over a 10 year period.
