Project updates

Situated midway along the popular tourist route Christchurch to Queenstown, Tekapo is a town that is growing and becoming a destination in its own right. More housing, commercial and tourist developments have been constructed in recent years and more are anticipated.

As a result of the increase in the size of Tekapo and the visitor numbers in the area, the residents of Tekapo have become increasingly concerned about safety along State Highway 8.

What we know

Tekapo is experiencing rapid growth with further housing and business development underway and planned. Waka Kotahi Transport Agency is aware the Tekapo community has been calling for changes in speed limits in their township as a result of the increase in traffic, pedestrians and cyclists.

In the ten-year period between 2009 and 2018, there were 19 crashes on SH8 in Tekapo. Two people were seriously injured as a result, and four incurred minor injuries.

Current SH8 Tekapo speed limits as at August 2019
