We’ve talked to the Port Chalmers community, Dunedin City Council, local businesses, the West Harbour Community Board and local schools. They’ve said to us that the current 50km/h speed limit on this section of highway feels too high to be safe. We’ve reviewed the speed that people are currently driving at on the highway and found that 40km/h on SH88 through Port Chalmers is a safe and appropriate speed for this route. A lower limit is needed because of the high number of heavy vehicles using this section of highway and the large number of pedestrians in the town during the October to April cruise ship season. A hill at the mid-point of the route also limits driver visibility, while elderly people find it challenging crossing this wide and busy highway.
What we’re proposing

|Introduce a new lower speed limit on a 600m section of SH88 on George Street in Port Chalmers between Wickcliffe Terrace and Beach Street.
