Work has started to construct the Petone to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua. This section is funded by the Transport Agency and Hutt City Council, and is being delivered by contractors, Fulton Hogan.

The Petone to Melling section will join the Ngauranga to Petone section and Wellington CBD to Ngauranga section, which includes the Hutt Road and Thorndon Quay cycleways.

Key elements of the Petone to Melling section include:

  • rail underpasses at Petone and Parliament Street (near the Normandale overbridge)
  • a well-marked route through the Petone railway station car park
  • a cycle bypass for southbound cyclists at the Dowse interchange
  • a connection to the existing Hutt River Trail.

What’s happening

Updated: 30 March 2020

Petone to Melling construction is temporarily shutting down

In line with the Government’s direction in response to COVID-19 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the contractors and suppliers working on our behalf stopped work on all capital projects effective from 11:59pm on Wednesday 25 March 2020.

Our priority at this time is to ensure that while we close down construction sites, they remain safe places for you to travel through or near. We will keep safe traffic management in place, as well as appropriate environmental controls.

Throughout the closure you can be assured that we will continue to monitor our sites and that safety remains our top priority.
You may have questions about what this closure will mean for project completion dates. We are still working to establish this information, and we will keep you updated on our website and in future updates.

On the Petone to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua, this means construction of the underpass beneath the rail at Parliament Street will be postponed. This work was due to take place over Easter weekend. We will work with KiwiRail to find a new date for this work.

Waka Kotahi remains committed to keeping New Zealanders moving and we will resume work as soon as we can.
