Project introduction

Improvements to State Highway 1 around Basin Reserve in Wellington to make it a safer and more reliable route for motorists, buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

The road network around the Basin Reserve is an important link in the State Highway 1 corridor between Levin and Wellington Airport. The improvements will assist the smooth flow of traffic between the north and south of Wellington City.

This work aims to improve the reliability and travel times of the route for through traffic, particularly to Wellington Airport and Wellington Hospital. An important consideration is to provide enhanced amenities, safety and convenience for people who walk and cycle.

About the project

Being an important passenger and commuter link for the Wellington region and Wellington city, this project involved a partnership between the NZ Transport Agency, Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC), Wellington City Council (WCC) and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage (MCH). In mid-2009, the Transport Agency invited tenders for the undertaking of investigations on the planned improvements around the Basin Reserve. The contract was awarded to Opus International Consultants. A multi-disciplinary team developed options for public engagement.

This project subsite is now archived. For the latest information on improvements to the state highway roading network between the Terrace Tunnel and Mt Victoria Tunnel, please visit The Tunnel to Tunnel Inner City Transport Improvements.
