Ōtaki River Bridge to Taylors Road shared path

Work on the new shared path through Ōtaki is nearing completion. The final section will be the installation of the two clip-ons – one for one for the old Ōtaki River Bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge.

About the project

Map showing Ōtaki River Bridge to Taylors Road shared pathway.

The final part of the shared path project will be the installation of the bridge clip-ons – one for one for the old Ōtaki River Bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge. The Ōtaki shared pathway is part of and funded through the Peka Peka to Ōtaki (PP2Ō) Expressway project.

Once complete, the shared path through Ōtaki will link the township with the rest of Kāpiti via existing shared pathways, and will help improve safety of walking and cycling, and encourage recreation and tourism in Ōtaki.

By building a shared path well-separated from other road users, we’re creating safer and more enjoyable journeys – not just for cyclists and pedestrians – but for motorists too.

Separating walking and cycling paths from the road is the best and safest option as it removes any chance of pedestrians and cyclists being at risk from live traffic lanes.

Ōtaki Bridge shared path

With Ōtaki Bridge we’ll be installing the shared path using stop/go traffic management – allowing traffic to cross the bridge in both directions. While this stop/go traffic management will still cause some disruption and delays to road users, we’ll work to minimise the impact as much as possible.

There’ll be a temporary speed limit of 30km/h through the work area to keep road users and work crews safe.

From 12 August, construction begins on the clip-on foundations at either end of the bridge. This work is expected to continue through until early December. To construct these foundations, which involves cutting into the adjacent traffic lane, the southbound lane on the bridge needs to remain closed 24/7, requiring stop/go traffic management.

Following the construction of the foundations, we’ll complete installation of the support brackets and shared path clip-on in the first quarter of 2025. While stop/go will still be in use during work hours, this final stage of installation will allow for two lane access outside of working hours. Both lanes will also be open during the Christmas closedown period.

If you have any questions or concerns during construction, you can contact contractor Downer on 022 505 7152 or via manawatuenquiries@downer.co.nz.
