Registration refers to paying a one-off fee to add a vehicle’s details to the Motor Vehicle Register (MVR). When the vehicle is added to the register, Waka Kotahi issues licence plates for it. This only happens once for most vehicles when they’ve arrived in New Zealand and are first going to be used on the road.
* This fee covers the cost to Waka Kotahi of maintaining the integrity of VIN data in the motor vehicle register. It will be collected from the first registered person of all vehicles new to New Zealand.
**This fee covers the cost to Waka Kotahi to assess the chassis rating of a vehicle. It will only be collected for heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle mass over 3500kg.
