As part of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s commitment to open data we provide a range of vehicle fleet and registration statistics. These are updated regularly.
The Motor Vehicle Register (MVR) records information about vehicles used on New Zealand roads and the persons responsible for their use.
The motor vehicle registrations dashboard shows all vehicles registered in New Zealand for the first time, during the most recent calendar month.

Authorised access to the register
The New Zealand vehicle fleet open data provides a point-in-time ‘snapshot’ of all vehicles currently registered in New Zealand. The data relates to currently registered vehicles as recorded on the MVR and is updated monthly, so data is accurate as at the end of the month previous to when it’s accessed.

Monthly snapshots of the vehicles currently registered in New Zealand. Information is provided by vehicle type, licence status, fuel type and vehicle year.
Information on first-time registrations each month, including by vehicle type, import status, fuel type, cc rating and vehicle year.
Additions to the national vehicle fleet
Information on the number of vehicles that have had a change of registered person each month, including by vehicle type and sales type.
Monthly warrant of fitness (WoF) and certificate of fitness (CoF) inspection volumes by region.

Parliamentary questions, both oral (OPQs) and written (WPQs), are formal questions posed by MPs to Ministers. In response to Parliamentary questions, the Minister and Associate Minister of Transport often draw on data held by Waka Kotahi in the MVR.
