About driver licences

New Zealand's driver licensing system

New Zealand has a driver licensing system to make sure that everyone who drives on our roads has the skills and knowledge necessary to be a safe driver.

Getting a heavy vehicle driver licence

An overview of how to obtain a heavy vehicle driver
licence.

How to get your heavy vehicle driver licence

This section outlines each stage of the four heavy vehicle driver licence classes.

  • Stage 1 - learner licence
  • Stage 2 - full licence

Driver licensing application requirements

When you apply for each stage of your licence, licence class, licence endorsement, or when you renew your licence, you will need to present evidence of your identity.

Other licensing information

The date your licence classes expire is shown on the back of your licence card. If you want to keep on driving after that date you will need to renew your licence before it expires.
