If you need to access the state highway corridor to install services, hold an event or parade, access a property, or for any other reason, you must ensure it is:
- safe for everyone
- meets legal requirements
- well planned to reduce disruption.
You may need:
- An approved traffic management plan if your activity changes how traffic normally flows, creates risks for people travelling, or uses traffic control devices like cones or signs.
- A works access permit if you’re installing or working on utility services (like water, power or telecommunications) or doing anything that might affect underground or roadside infrastructure. A WAP is the approval issued by NZTA (or the relevant authority) after reviewing a Corridor Access Request.
- A land use or access approval if your activity involves property access, like building a driveway, or makes a permanent change to the roadside.
Check what applies before you start. Use our guidance to find the right approvals and make sure your activity is good to go.
Closing the state highway
If you are proposing to close the road, you must work with our regional teams who will assist you in the planning stages of your event. Several factors will be considered when approving road closures including:
- the reason for closure
- the impacts of the closure on the customers and traveling public
- stakeholder engagement
- availability, suitability and approval of detour routes particularly if they belong to another road controlling authority.
If you think you require a closure, you’ll need to contact our regional teams. Please email us to start this process: info@nzta.govt.nz
