The Ecological impact assessment: EIANZ guidelines for use in New Zealand: terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems(external link) (EIANZ, 2015) is accepted by the Transport Agency as current best practice for undertaking ecological impact assessments (EcIA). These guidelines have been adopted by the Transport Agency and tailored to give more specific direction for application on state highway projects in the Guidance on ecological impact assessment for NZ Transport Agency projects.

The purpose of the guidelines is to provide nationally consistent direction on the approach to be adopted when assessing ecological impacts as they relate to state highway improvement projects. It explains how ecological impact assessment fits within a state highway project lifecycle, including the business case approach, and provides clear guidance on the Transport Agency’s expectations for assessing impacts during each phase of highway improvement project development and delivery. These guidelines are currently under development.
