If a rail licence holder fails to take the required remedial action after a safety assessment, we may require the licence holder to prepare and submit a safety improvement plan.

If the activities are deemed unsafe to continue until the remedial action has been satisfactorily undertaken, the licence holder may have to cease those activities.

The safety improvement plan must include:

  • a summary of the remedial action(s) to be undertaken
  • a description of the expected outcomes and how they will address the safety requirements of the remedial action
  • a list of the key actions to be taken, including who is accountable for each action and its due date
  • the process by which we will be kept informed of progress
  • a summary of how the outcomes will be managed.

Once the plan is approved, the licence holder must implement the plan and not amend it without our approval.
