A safety assessment involves a Transport Agency safety assessor visiting your organisation and checking that your rail activities comply with the Act, your safety case and your safety system(s). It’s an objective and evidence-based process that takes a snapshot of the activity in key areas.
The assessment of your systems and safety performance will allow the safety assessor to identify if there are any areas of non-compliance and to make recommendations for safety improvement. If any systemic or significant safety issues are identified, you may be required to carry out remedial actions (as per section 42 of the Act(external link)).
Note: There may be more than one safety assessor depending on the size and complexity of your operation.
The assessment is not an inspection. For example, safety assessors won’t inspect track conditions, but instead they might check the last time a suitably qualified person inspected the track and whether there are processes in place to act on any findings and to manage the frequency of these inspections. That is, the safety assessor is testing that your own system is functioning effectively and that it’s being complied with
