The Safe Network Programme was announced in late 2018 and over the next three years it will be committed to making New Zealand’s roads safe, across priority regions. The $1.3-1.5 billion investment will be spread across the country, focusing on high risk state highways and local roads.

Important information about the crash data in the maps and infographics

  • This data is provided from the road traffic crash database; Crash Analysis System (CAS).
  • Data is limited to police reported crashes on state highways for the years 2012 to 2017 as recorded in CAS to December 2018.
  • Due to the police reporting time frame and subsequent data processing there is a lag from the time of a crash to full and correct crash records within CAS.
  • Due to the nature of non-fatal crashes it is believed that these are under-reported, with the level of under-reporting decreasing with the severity of the crash.
  • ‘SH crashes’ is the number of crashes of all crash severities on State Highways in the region.
  • ‘SH deaths’ is the number of deaths on state highways in the region.
  • ‘SH serious injuries’ is the number of serious injuries on state highways in the region.
