Safe speeds contribute to improving safety on New Zealand roads, by reducing the likelihood of people crashing and reducing the severity of crashes.  This helps save lives and prevent serious injuries.

A new approach to setting speed limits was introduced by the Government in 2024, focused on enabling people to get where they’re going efficiently and safely.

Under the Government’s new rule, economic impacts including travel times, as well as road users and communities’ views must be considered alongside safety by those responsible for setting speed limits.

Setting safe speed limits is just one way to improve safety on our roads.

The Setting of Speed Limits Rule

The Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 (the Rule) sets out criteria, requirements and procedures to be followed by Road Controlling Authorities (RCAs) when reviewing and setting speed limits for roads within their control.

The Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits Amendment 2024 (the Amendment Rule) made two additional classes of road subject to speed limit reversals. It came into force on 15 January 2025.
