The Better Conversations on Road Risk programme is based on the belief that conversation is a powerful motivator for change. This means every conversation about road risk has the potential to make a difference to road safety in our communities.
These guidelines are designed as a reminder about the components of powerful conversations, and to help you engage positively with people in your community and have better conversations about road risk.
1. Every conversation counts
Make use of every opportunity to enter the conversation about speed, and offer a new perspective. This could be a social engagement, a formal or professional interaction, a comment on social media or a letter to the editor in a newspaper.
2. Conversation is an exchange
Listen to what people are saying, and think about which messages or angles will have the most positive impact on the conversation, or will make it easiest for others to engage with and understand you.
3. Conversation is real
Use your own words, use the messages only if they make sense to you, and make the points that matter to you.
4. Many voices matter
The more people who enter the conversation, the better. Hearing many voices will help people understand that a range of views are valid and will increase the chance that a conversation is balanced.
5. Meet the conversation where it happens
Listen to where people are talking about road risk and speed, and enter the conversation there. Every time you enter a conversation with a new way of talking about road risk and speed, you’re making a difference.
6. Focus on the goal
Help communities make choices by having an open conversation about all the options for improving safety on their roads.
