How people are currently talking about road risk and speed

A scan of news and social media shows widespread tolerance of speeding. Many people are frequently unashamed to openly defend their right to drive faster than the limit. Coverage tends to focus on extreme events, or reinforce stereotypes that facts don’t support.

But we also see many communities asking drivers to be more patient, too, and drive slowly through their streets. Emergency services, police, and community leaders frequently ask members of the public to stay within the posted limits, to drive the right speed for the road and the conditions, and to keep themselves and others safe. However, these voices often don’t come through loudly in the public debate, or they are drowned out by louder voices.

When the conversation is not balanced it's difficult for communities to have constructive conversations about how to improve road safety in their area.
