When you pay your registration fee to get your vehicle on the road for the first time, you also need to pay six or 12 months of licensing fees at the same time.

CO2 emission fee 

If you are registering your vehicle for the first time in New Zealand, depending on the CO2 emission of the vehicle, you may have to pay a Clean Car fee 

Clean Car fees must be paid as part of the registration process. If your invoice is less than $1000 you’ll receive the invoice label at the counter. If your invoice is over $1000, you’ll receive it via email or post (depending on existing preferences).

Synthetic greenhouse gas levy

Owners of passenger vehicles and goods vehicles that contain the synthetic greenhouse gas (SGG) HFC-134a (R134a) in the air conditioning unit are required to pay a synthetic greenhouse gas levy when their vehicle is registered.

The SGG levies include GST and may be subject to rounding.
