Research and analysis

The following reports were developed to explore specific aspects of the public transport system.

  • Research programme – we invest in innovative and relevant research, which plays a critical role in contributing to the government's goals for land transport.
  • Customer insights are an important source of information about how people experience and interact with the public transport system, helping to guide service improvements and strategic planning on a regional and national level.
    • Customer Journey Monitor is an ongoing NZTA survey tracking customer experiences with land transport. The Public Transport Deep Dive is a one-off 2024 report exploring public transport-specific insights, including demographics, usage, and key drivers of experience.
    • Customer satisfaction surveys are a key tool for public transport authorities to understand user experiences, identify areas for improvement, and meet NZTA reporting requirements. Information about each region’s survey, including results, is available on their respective websites, listed on this page: Public transport services
  • Total Mobility data analysis examines anonymised information collected from the Total Mobility scheme in New Zealand to understand user trends, costs, and service effectiveness for people with disabilities who require subsidised taxi travel.
  • Bus Decarbonisation Electricity Demand Study explores the electrification of public bus fleets across ten New Zealand regions and its impact on electricity grid demand. It aims to help public transport authorities understand the costs and timeframes associated with transitioning to battery electric buses, including infrastructure needs and fleet viability.
