Walking and cycling facilities help make cities and towns more liveable and support tourism.

During 2021-24 about $910 million will be invested in walking and cycling initiatives, which will extend networks across the country and improve connections to a range of transport choices. This will improve safety and accessibility, and make a significant contribution to the revitalisation of town and city centres. The Crown also continues to make significant investment in walking and cycling activities through the NZ Upgrade Programme.

As part of creating a successful multimodal transport system, we are working with our partners to improve the walking environment and current onroad sections of Te Araroa Walking Trail.
