SH1 south of Amberley connects people travelling north to Kaikōura and beyond, and south to Christchurch. It’s a busy road, with 11,185 vehicles travelling through each day, 16.9% of which are heavy vehicles, with a few people cycling. This road has one lane in each direction and sealed shoulders.

To the west, a service lane provides access to homes and small businesses. To the east, new residential and retirement village developments are underway, including a new intersection. The highway also supports local travel to businesses and the township. As development continues, managing speed is the most effective way to reduce crash risks at new intersections and driveways.  NZTA has received feedback from the community raising concerns about safely accessing the Carters Road service lane and requests for a lower speed limit. Upcoming development work includes new footpaths, a pedestrian refuge, and intersection improvements to make it safer for everyone.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 6 seconds longer per trip for all vehicles
  • Safety: 23% fewer injury crashes
  • Cost: $10,000.
