The SH1, Telegraph Road, Norwood Road intersection at Norwood is a key cross-district route in Selwyn District, connecting Rolleston and Darfield, and providing access to the West Coast. It supports significant rural activity and is a major route for milk tankers. SH1 is a critical interregional freight corridor, with high volumes of heavy vehicles. The intersection is used primarily by freight and rural traffic, and there are no facilities for pedestrians or people cycling. The surrounding area is rural, with high travel speeds (100km/h) and limited road infrastructure. Adjacent to SH1 is farmland and the main south railway line.
We’re proposing an ISZ which has electronic variable speed limit signs to temporarily show a lower speed limit of 60km/h on SH1. This makes it easier and safer for people to pull into or out of a side road across a high-speed rural road, while avoiding unnecessary delays.
NZTA previously investigated the feasibility of a roundabout here but found it would be too complex due to side road alignment, proximity to the rail line, and the need to buy substantial areas of private property.
