This section of SH1 is part of the Rolleston access improvements – a Roads of Regional Significance project. The project will deliver a bridge over SH1 to connect the township with business and industrial areas, improve safety at high-risk intersections, and create a more resilient and sustainable transport network.

Travel through and around Rolleston will be safer and more predictable. The proposed speed limit change is included in the project design to support Rolleston’s growth and reduce harm on this high-risk section of road.

While Rolleston Drive South will become left-in/left-out only, there are still multiple property accesses directly onto the highway.

The new roundabout with a pedestrian and cycling subway under construction at the SH1 Dunns Crossing/Walkers Roads intersection creates safer southern entrances to Rolleston and provides safer right-turn access for these properties along SH1. The proposed speed limit will help reduce the severity of a crash and is a better fit for the current and future road environment.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 10 seconds longer per trip for light vehicles; 9 seconds for heavy vehicles
  • Safety: 29% fewer injury crashes
  • Cost: $25,000.
