SH1 is a key freight route between Christchurch and Dunedin, while serving the local community as the main road to work, school, and the town centre. It’s used by a wide mix of people, freight operators, pedestrians, cyclists, car and ute drivers. The road environment is urban, with footpaths on both sides, multiple intersections, and ongoing subdivision of larger properties into smaller lots. As land use intensifies, the current speed limit no longer reflects the surrounding environment. Lowering the speed limit will reduce the severity of any crashes and better reflects the needs of the community.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 4 seconds longer per trip for all vehicles
  • Safety: 24% fewer injury crashes
  • Cost: $10,000.
