This section of SH1 through Temuka has multiple residential and industrial access points. Locals report long wait times at intersections like Hopkinsons Road and Huirapa Street, with visibility affected by a rise in the road and heavy vehicle traffic. The marae on Huirapa Street hosts events, which can draw large gatherings, and the current speed is seen as unsafe for whānau and visitors. Footpath upgrades have increased the numbers of pedestrians and people cycling, and nearby housing and industrial growth is adding to traffic.

A fixed spot speed safety camera is located on SH1 near Georgetown Road. Fixed speed cameras help reduce deaths and serious injuries by encouraging safer driving behaviour and improving compliance with speed limits.

A lower speed limit will help reduce the severity of any crashes and further support safety, while better reflecting the needs of the community.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 4 seconds longer per trip for all vehicles
  • Safety: 23% fewer injury crashes
  • Cost: $20,000.
