The SH6, SH97 intersection at Five Rivers is a key junction on the Southern Scenic Route between Queenstown, Te Anau and Milford Sound. It’s primarily used by vehicles, including freight and tourist traffic, and has long been a concern for the local community, often referred to as a crash ‘black spot’.
The environment is rural and high-speed (100km/h).
We’re proposing an ISZ which has electronic variable speed limit signs to temporarily show a lower speed limit of 60km/h on SH6. This makes it easier and safer for people to pull into or out of SH97 across a high-speed rural road, while avoiding unnecessary delays.
Previous safety upgrades have included improved lighting and a right-turn bay. An average speed safety camera is confirmed for north of the intersection, through to Kingston, with enforcement expected by the end of 2026. (While camera sites are not subject to public consultation, we engaged with key partners in 2025.) Average speed cameras can reduce deaths and serious injuries on suitable New Zealand roads by around 48%.
Introducing an ISZ will help reduce the severity of crashes and further support safety improvements at this high-risk intersection.
