We’re proposing a lower speed limit through Blacks Point to improve safety for everyone using the road through this small, active community.

SH7 is a key route linking Reefton to Springs Junction, and further on to Tasman and Canterbury. The road is primarily used by vehicles, with occasional cyclists and pedestrians.

Blacks Point is a small township with limited facilities, and the current speed environment does not reflect the local conditions. Reducing the speed limit is the most effective way to reduce the severity of any crashes and respond to long-standing community feedback.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 2 seconds longer per trip for all vehicles
  • Safety: no expected change (no injury crashes recorded in the past 5 years)
  • Cost: $25,000.
