SH73 is a key route connecting Christchurch and the West Coast and plays an important role in freight and resilience across the region. In Kirwee, the road is mainly used by vehicles, with a small number of people cycling. The environment is peri-urban, with footpaths on one side of the road, several intersections, and ongoing subdivision of larger properties into multiple lots. Kirwee is a growing community spread across both sides of the highway and the railway line, with residential development continuing. Reducing the speed limit will reduce the severity of any crashes, particularly when turning at intersections. While other safety improvements may be considered in future, lowering the speed limit is a practical first step to improve safety now.
